JJ is the first Bahamian player in the WNBA. She was childhood buddies with fellow Bahamian professional baller Buddy Hield. Jonquel moved to the U.S. for high school to get the basketball training she needed to make it to the next level. (She originally played soccer but switched to focusing on basketball due to the homophobia she faced when she was TWELVE.)
Jonquel made it to that next level and beyond. She has taken over in the WNBA and is one of those players who refuses to stop getting better. From Most Improved player and Sixth Woman of the Year, she is now an MVP-level player. She's a center who can both block shots and take threes. Before taking the 2020 season off, JJ was the league's top rebounder (Board Woman Gets Paid).
Board Woman pays it back too. She is an advocate for protecting the environment of the Bahamas and rallied the WNBA to raise money to individuals recovering from Hurricane Dorian. I have never heard a single bad word about JQJ and her megawatt smile. And I refuse to let that change.
